BERLIN, (EFE).- El expresidente alemán Roman Herzog, jefe de Estado entre 1994 y 1999, murió a los 82 años de edad por una grave enfermedad, según confirmó este martes la Oficina de la Presidencia. En un comunicado, la canciller alemana, Angela Merkel, expresó su “profunda tristeza” por la muerte de Herzog, con el que Alemania pierde no sólo a un “expresidente muy estimado, sino a un patriota” que sirvió al país desde diversos cargos.
Hablaba con claridad, no era nada pretencioso, tenía sentido del humor, era irónico consigo mismo y desempeñó su cargo de presidente con “su propio estilo inimitable”, subrayó la canciller, quien recordó que Herzog “manifestó una y otra vez su convencimiento de que el país debía siempre continuar desarrollándose y renovándose”. También a nivel europeo y en relación con el pasado de Alemania supo transmitir importantes mensajes, “con las palabras correctas y callando ahí donde no había palabras” posibles, recordó.
